Thanks!

there is no light illuminating the inside, all the light comes 'from' the
lettering on the outside of the ring.

Very difficult, but I have sort of made them light sources. See below.

*WARNING! SPOILER BELOW ;) (FOR THE SCENE, NOT THE MOVIE)*
The letters come from a png image with the background solid and the letters
transparent.
I then mapped them to a hollow cylinder(with no_image and no_reflection)
and put a point light at the center of the cylinder. As you would expect,
the light shines through the letters only.
I then made a very thin layer of scattering media with a high density where
the surface of the ring is, making the light shinging through the letters
visible (you'll notice how the lettering appears brighter at the sides of
the ring) I put another sphere of lower density scattering media outside
this to pick up more of the light rays as they shine on.
The ring itself is inside a light group so as not to pick up or block any of
the previous light. I put an additional light inside the light group at the
centre of the ring projected_through it to give the wood below it a little
illumination.
The letters appear to project back into the ring a bit because of the
reflection of the light rays travelling through the media.
